Postcard routing by e-mail address

It worked! This time it worked.
When on vacation in Scotland, it didn’t work: Addressing a picture postcard to the e-mail address of the students representatives’ office. For any technology-acquainted person, the address “fachschaft@informatik.uni-stuttgart.de” locates our office globally and in a quite detailed way. Yet, the postcard never arrived.
Different with my Iceland postcard. It did arrive! [...]

Resize images in a smart way

There’s a video on hackszine.com about a new image resizing technique that looks very promising. Great stuff!
(Thx Koke’s)

Hacked?

This morning I thought I got hacked. It’s not impossible, though quite unlikely, even in Linux. I had some really weird behavior: First I noticed for the first time that xchat-gnome prints a message “external access successfully loaded!” on start, which - at least in Windows’ mIRC - is a good sign for a hacker’s [...]

My Dell Ubuntu notebook

How cool is that? I just ordered an Ubuntu notebook from Dell.
As I said earlier, my laptop harddisk has crashed. A new one @ 150 € isn’t an option, so I looked for a new laptop. Basic limitations:

No ATI graphics card (bad drivers in Linux, bad reputation)
No graphics card not working easily (Intel X3100)
No wireless [...]

Quickies

I’m back from Iceland. A website covering photos & a travel report will follow soon.
My girlfriend left me. Or rather, she suggested breaking up, and we both agreed it was the best thing to do. We just weren’t made for each other…
My laptop harddisk is crashing currently. I wanted to buy a new laptop within [...]

Iceland travel diary 17

We’ve been to a crevice, the surrounding hills, the solvate fields and a lava field.

The solvate fields spray heat, steam, sulfuric stenches and hot water. The ground is so soft you have to watch out not to break through into 80° to 100°C hot water. These areas are closed off though. From a nearby hill [...]

Iceland travel diary 16

Our path leads us to the Dettifoss. 28 km over rocky, pothole-contaminated road! I wouldn’t have believed our car would make it - or us, considering the nonexistent tire profile. But of course you can compensate through careful driving. Memorial on the ash plain next to the road: A tipped over compact car, some blood [...]

Iceland travel diary 15

One has to say we’re doing quite well with our roadmap. Some time ago we decided against buying a “good” roadmap for 1.000 - 3.000 ISK (= 11,73 - 35,20 €). Instead, we’re comfortable with getting local maps from tourist information centers and using Merian and travel guide maps, because we’re never too far from [...]

Iceland travel diary 14

Last night we went for a canoe ride in the nearby lake using the site-owned boat. After about 3 minutes we noticed a foul stench of the “water treatment plant” kind and quickly went back.
The night itself was calm but bitter; My sleeping bag and jacket are at their limits.
Because of my economic usage, I [...]

Iceland travel diary 13

Having taken in some energy, I feel much better. How amazing are these showers? The camping site at the entrance of Reyðarfjörður is free of charge and the shows are the most comfortable since the start of the journey:

Working, readable, faultless instruments
Hot water
High water pressure
Very clean
Water smells and tastes normal

You don’t get that every day [...]
