Iceland travel diary 15
One has to say we’re doing quite well with our roadmap. Some time ago we decided against buying a “good” roadmap for 1.000 - 3.000 ISK (= 11,73 - 35,20 €). Instead, we’re comfortable with getting local maps from tourist information centers and using Merian and travel guide maps, because we’re never too far from the ring road.

Inside Egilsstaðir we drove to a long lake - a worm-like creatur, like the monster of Loch Ness, is supposed to live in there. When I threw in a big stone, there were two “clonk” sounds. Did I wake the beast?
Archer is sick. He’s had a cold for a few days now, today he’s tired, has a light fever, coughs a lot. Good thing we packed a lot of medication.

At noon we drove to Borgafjördur (spelling? Not sure about the name anyway). A wonderful area - very mystic with a lot of places and sagas about elves. In the fjords and valleys, clouds arrive from the seaside and crawl up the mountains - dwarf-beards alike. When we arrived at the sea in the fjord itself, we found a lookout post for birds and were able to see some atlantic puffins. The cute birds breed there and often fly about. A real highlight for me.

Now we drove a couple of hours and are on our way to Mývatn. We’ll stay there for two days and make some trips.

On our way we found some cairns - they’re in the middle of nowhere, especially on hills; Nobody knows who made them. Are they just a pedestal for photographers or have they been erected by trolls as natural monuments? They are as fascinating as crop circles.
