Updating the BIOS without Windows or a disk drive

I want to upgrade my CPU, so I needed a new BIOS revision. Which is not easy, considering I run Linux. And that I don’t have a 1,44 disk drive.
So I looked around. Boot disks are easily available. Problem is that they usually require a second CD drive (which I don’t have either) for the [...]

Introduction to interface-based programming

Here are some helpful links that helped me get into this topic:

Overview by O’Reilly, C#.NET (+ some VB)
Example by ACM in Java
Builder pattern on Wikipedia (for factories)
Abstract factory pattern on Wikipedia (for abstract factories ;P)
Marker interface pattern on Wikipedia

I’ll add more if I find/need more.

Scrambled egg with cheese

I had some leftovers for lunch, and improved them with tomato soup, a big salad and - scrambled egg with cheese.
When I looked for ham to put into the eggs I came across a pack of cheese, namely Grünländer. The idea of putting that into scrambled egg seemed to good to be true. So along [...]

RubyGems

I’ve just had hell with RubyGems on Ubuntu.
I’ve been trying to build Apache ODE, an open source workflow engine.

rake & buildr need to be installed using the RubyGems packaging system. But [...]

Steve Purcell has a blog…

… and I don’t know about it?
I admire his works and loved his stuff in the older LucasArts adventures. I’m probably one of the few Germans who own a real copy of the collected Sam & Max cartoons.
Just now I read on Ron Gilbert’s blog that the very guy is online under a [...]

Choosing the right API

How do I choose the right API?
For my diploma thesis I need to select a BPEL API that will make it easier to interface with the workflow language. So I got

Apache ODE: Lightweight, straightforward, no full BPEL 2.0 compliance, mostly Intalio people, might change the XML/BPEL tree on-the-fly
Eclipse BPEL Designer: Eclipse Modelling Framework, Interface/Factory patterns, [...]

Chen’s Cooking

Yesterday, we visited a new restaurant, just around the corner - Chen’s Cooking. It’s in Stuttgart Zuffenhausen, so almost within walking distance from my place.
The restaurant is clean, open, with rather modern furniture. Staff is Asian without any exceptions that I would have noticed and extremely friendly and helpful.
We were greeted and got a [...]
