Saving energy
Some days ago I cleaned up with some of the cables lying around on my desk. I also reconnected some things differently. So now, the power supply of my external hard disk is permanently connected, even when the disk is not. It was just easier this way.
Still, I wasn’t happy with the thought it might drain energy uselessly. And how right I was.
Tonight I put a watt meter between my “useless” power supplies and the plug (one by its own, always). Results:
- Laptop power supply takes 4W. (Dis-)connecting the laptop doesn’t change a thing. Using the average 2007 price for electricity in Germany (Wikipedia), this amounts to 5€ per year.
- Digicam & cell phone charger don’t take much power (meter was showing 0W).
- External hard disk power supply takes between 9 and 11W. Amounts to about 12,50€ per year.
So yeah. I’ll disconnect more stuff.
