munin & monit
Today I want to suggest two tools I discovered the last days: munin & monit.
munin is a tool that has taken all my clunky rrdtool scripts to /dev/null, doing the same with less work.
monit is a tool watching your processes, files, resources and acts upon the results (like restarting services that have frozen or killing unnecessary services if there’s too much sysload) .
I know this makes me sound like a bad sysadmin (because I didn’t know earlier), but these tools already helped me detect a near-broken hard disk and find an error in my mail config.
There’s a nice (though old) howto that can help you get startedwith both.

Just wanted to follow the howto and install it but my server seems to be down. :-/
